  IN MEMORIAM |

Charles J. (“Charlie”) Davis, III

1946 – 2023

“They don’t make ’em like Charlie, anymore.”

For over 40 years, Charlie’s understanding of Virginia’s political and media landscapes was unmatched. His perspective was regularly sought out by leaders in both the public and private sectors, including elected officials and representatives of print and electronic news organizations throughout Virginia.

Prior to founding Davis Consultants in 1991 alongside his wife, Christine, Charlie served for nine years as Vice President of Government Relations for CSX Corporation; Virginia Governor John Dalton’s Press Secretary and Executive Assistant; News Director of the Dalton for Governor campaign; Director of Information for the Virginia ABC Department, and News Editor for WRVA Radio in Richmond. He worked in all aspects of the broadcast industry for two decades prior to and following graduation from the University of Virginia, including his tour of duty with the U. S. Air Force and the American Forces Radio and Television Service stateside and overseas. In addition to government affairs, Charlie also continued to write, produce and narrate commercial radio and television messages for the public and private sectors.

From political allies to respected colleagues, lobbyists to legislators, and senators to presidents, his gregarious personality meant he never met a stranger, and never met a person that he couldn’t hash things out with (perhaps with a cigarette in hand and sly grin on his face!). His many offices over the years grew with the number of framed pictures, letters, anecdotes, and memorabilia from his many meetings, encounters, and relationships that he intentionally and steadfastly cultivated. The personal interaction for him was what mattered above all else. He firmly believed that after all was said and done with meetings and sessions and phone calls and strategies, taking that little bit of extra time to write a personalized note to someone – thanking them for their time, congratulating them on a good outcome, or just passing along a humorous quote or story – would make all the difference in terms of how that relationship developed. Without fail, that effort did indeed make all the difference – as evidenced by the sprawling network of friends and associates that he built.

Charlie was larger than life, and remains so in death – he will be incredibly missed as a husband, father, friend, and mentor to all those who knew him.

Let's build your success together.
