Virginia Dept. of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard now breaks down cases by vaccination status

RICHMOND, Va. – You’ll now be able to see coronavirus rates in Virginia broken down by vaccination status, thanks to a shake-up of the health department’s COVID dashboard. On the dashboard, viewers can now see the rate of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and death in people who are fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated or unvaccinated by week, going back to Jan. 2021.

Virginia named America’s Top State of Business; unemployment rate drops to 4.2% in July

(WFXR) — Virginia’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent in July. Gov. Ralph Northam says that it is 3.7 percentage points below the rate from last year.

New data out shows the Commonwealth added 144,000 jobs over 12 months across every economic sector. Once again, Virginia has been named America’s Top State of Business by CNBC.

LEGISLATION: Virginia lawmakers say their law was not intended to mandate masks, contradicting Northam’s order

As students prepared to head back to the classroom in Virginia, two state senators sent a letter to school officials saying districts are allowed to make their own decisions about pandemic safety guidelines. The letter came a week after the state implemented an indoor mask mandate for schools.

REDISTRICTING: A Blank Slate and Familiar Face as Virginia Redistricting Begins New Maps

The Virginia Redistricting Commission voted on Monday to start with a blank slate when they draw the commonwealth’s new political districts rather than beginning with current lines. 

They’ll conduct their work with the help of two partisan map-drawing firms. On Monday, the commission met those experts for the first time. Republicans picked John Morgan, a Republican who helped GOP lawmakers draw House of Delegates districts in 2011.

STATEWIDE: Virginia GOP tries legal tactic to force Democrat McAuliffe off the ballot for governor

Warner Talks $1T Infrastructure Bill At City Visit

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner spoke into the microphone — the speaker barely able to project the Virginia Democrat’s voice to the small crowd gathered Monday between U.S. 33 and Interstate 81.

Warner is on a four-day trip through the state and stopped in the city at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the $1 trillion infrastructure package he and a bipartisan group of senators wrote and passed in the upper chamber of Congress 13 days prior.

Rep. Spanberger called on President Biden to extend Afghanistan withdrawal deadline

Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07) released a statement Thursday morning urging President Joe Biden to extend the Aug. 31 deadline for the complete removal of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The statement from Spanberger, a former CIA agent, was co-authored by Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH-16) and endorsed by 75% of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bipartisan group in Congress comprised of 58 members – equally divided between Democrats and Republicans.
